Konrad Mine Virtual Tour
Situated between Brunswick and Salzgitter and visible from far away, the four-post head frame of shaft 1 announces mining activities. About 40 years ago, ore was mined at Konrad, but only for a short time. Just like the miners in those days and today, you can visit the mine - in reality or virtually!
After changing your clothes and receiving instructions in the use of the self-contained self rescuers, you will descend into the mine down to the third level at a depth of 1,000 m. Using mine vehicles, you can travel about forty kilometres of roadways with a vertical elevation variation of 500 m. The roadway network is deeper and more extensive than in Gorleben or Morsleben.
You travel with breathtaking speed - at least this is the impression you have! However, this is an illusion caused by narrow drifts, driving noises reflecting off the rock walls, and this unknown, brown ore-bearing underground world - in reality the speed is just 35 kilometres per hour.
One question remains unanswered: How does the driver find his way without landmarks and signposts in this twisting labyrinth? There is a lot to see down here! Large machines, such as loading machines or gigantic part-face heading machines used for excavating new roadways or widening drifts; sprinkler cars, which spray water on the flat roadways to bind the dust, even an electric truck is here. And also repair workshops for the machines and vehicles. And what looks like massive caterpillars wriggling through parts of the mine are rubber air conduits to ventilate some of the drifts.
You can see what the mine looks like at the moment on our "virtual tour". It will be a while until the conversion of the mine begins, so there is enough time for you to visit us in person. We, the staff of DBE, would be happy to show and explain the mine to you. Meanwhile, have fun and enjoy yourself during a virtual tour of the Konrad mine.
"Glück auf!"
