Current Operational Activities
The current operational activities are to ensure the safe operation of the mine and the continued safe storage of the radioactive waste. For this purpose, buildings, systems, machines and vehicles on the surface and underground are constantly monitored, inspected and maintained and worn-out or obsolete components are replaced by modern components in accordance with existing regulations.
Radar technology, extensometers, fissure meters and convergence measuring stations are used to continuously record and evaluate the mine's current geomechanical condition.
Within the framework of measures for hazard prevention in the central mine section a total of 22 cavities are to be backfilled with special-purpose concrete. Until the beginning of the planned final backfill of the repository cavities in 2010, a total of 740,000 m³ of special-purpose concrete will be stowed to stabilise the central section.
In compliance with legal requirements and demands by the authorities, the operation of the final repository, emissions into the environment, and the radiologic exposure of all persons in the controlled area will be continuously monitored.
From approximately 2011 onwards, it is intended to commence the safe closure of the mine, including the final disposal cavities, using state-of-the-art scientific and engineering methods.
The site approval and licensing procedure necessary for these works has been initiated.
